The Benefits of UKAS Accreditation

Posted by Admin on October 29 2018 in

UKAS accreditation assesses the technical competence and integrity of British organisations that offer evaluation services in the public interest.

Of course, accreditation has many potential benefits for the quality of goods being provided and in the provision of different services throughout the supply chain and underpins the practical applications of a rising number of activities spanning all sections of today’s economy. In fact, a recent study has found that it has a positive impact of around £1bn on the UK economy every year.

Benefits for the Government

UKAS is the only recognised appointed national accreditation for the Accreditation Regulations 2009 (SI No 3155/2009) and the EU Regulation (EC) 765/2008 and operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government through the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The accreditation that UKAS provides has been seen as an increasingly valuable tool for a wide range of policy areas for the Government - including better regulation, good governance, fair markets and public confidence. The Government already actively uses it as an effective tool for helping them to deliver policy more efficiently and deliver on its obligations in a wide range of public services – including healthcare, food production, energy supply, climate change and personal safety.

UKAS has become the only trusted body because it has established transparency and repeatable assessment procedures that are applicable to all forms of conformity and the benefits of collaborating with UKAS can:

• Reduce the need for central and local government to employ their own specialist assessment personnel. Accreditation provides the assurance for Government to rely on commercial providers of evaluation and inspection services.
• Build business and public trust
• Provide an alternative to Regulation whilst ensuring the reliability of activities that have the potential to impact on public confidence, health and safety or the environment.
• Enable innovation in the private and public sectors

You can find out further information about working with the Government and Public Sector Assurance on the UKAS website that illustrates the value of the accreditation. You will be able to access case studies, independent research and supporting information.

Benefits for Businesses

Often, companies will buy their own independent evaluations either through their own choice to reduce the risk of the product they are purchasing from failing or as a consequence of legal requirements within their industry, such as health and safety. In most cases, the evaluations that are carried out are the calibration of equipment, product testing, inspection of equipment and the certification of management systems.

• Selecting an accredited organisation is an essential tool for decision-making and risk management.
• Organisations can save time and money by selecting an accredited and therefore competent supplier.
• Reliable measurements, tests and inspections are carried out in compliance with best practices to limit product failure and reduce downtime and control manufacturing costs.
• Accreditation to internationally-recognised standards can provide a competitive advantage and facilitate access to export markets within the EU and beyond. (see international system)
• Using an accredited body to carry out an independent evaluation helps demonstrate due diligence in the event of legal action.

Bespoke Industrial Scale Solutions for busy production lines

Posted by Marketing on May 01 2018 in

To overlook technology, is to give your competitors an edge

With so much investment by British businesses in their manufacturing plant and production capabilities, it makes sense to be using the latest industrial weighing equipment that keep these processes running smoothly and at optimum efficiency levels.

Multiple Scale Systems for Production Runs

Most industrial processes these days require a bespoke approach when it comes to weighing equipment.  It’s true to say that complex production lines usually rely on several industrial scales running alongside each other.

These scales are typically set up to communicate with each other, can be synced with laptops/other reporting systems etc, providing complete transparency and the sharing of data.  It also provides traceability when it comes to quality monitoring to recognised British Standards, such as the average weight system.

A ‘Bespoke’ approach is sometimes required

Due to the many uses for electronic scales used in industrial manufacturing, it’s very often a requirement to design and build bespoke weighing system. Abacus Weighing Services are capable of designing and commissioning a system tailored to your exact requirements.

Abacus Weighing Services, a European distributor for the Dini Argeo range of scales, has over 30 years’ experience of designing bespoke weighing systems that provide efficient, cost-effective solutions.

From floor scales to digital bench scales, platform scales, drum scales, specialist crane scales and ATEX weighing equipment for flammable and potentially explosive environments, if you need a bespoke approach, Abacus has the experience to design, install and commission a bespoke system tailored to your unique requirements.

Looking beyond the price tag when buying industrial scale equipment

Posted by Marketing on April 17 2018 in

The majority of scale buyers don’t really understand what they actually require, so they go for the best price

Whilst affordability is always going to count, it’s important to think carefully about which scale option is going to provide the best solution for your requirements.

Without proper consideration of things like: maintenance costs, ongoing calibration requirements, compliance with relevant legislation, along with any other specific performance characteristics dictated by your working environment, your money could be wasted.

Consider lifecycle, legal compliance such as Weights and measures regulations, Hygiene regulations, ATEX Regulations etc

Customers need to look beyond the price, size etc, and even things like instant availability (if waiting means there is a better option), and consider if equipment offered is technically viable and wholly suitable for their working environment, is robust, and of course, fit for purpose, complying with all relevant legislations.

It pays to talk to an experienced equipment supplier like Abacus Weighing Services if you’re uncertain about which option is the best fit for your circumstances.  Don’t be afraid to make a quick phone call to clarify your thinking, so that you reach the right purchasing decision.

At the end of the day, the best industrial scale technology keeps the wheels of industry running smoothly, quickly and accurately, so making shortcuts with regard to price, can sometimes prove to be a false economy.

Equipment needs to be technically viable, robust and fit for purpose

Making a snap decision could be a costly mistake, leading to manufacturing issues down the line, so take your time, do your research and always work with a business like Abacus Weighing Services that can lead you through the process.

PITFALLS OF BUYING SCALES ONLINE

Posted by Marketing on March 28 2018 in

Buying online is a highly convenient, competitive and simple process.  But it’s only beneficial for the customer if they focus on the right things when it comes to industrial scales.

The industrial weighing industry can be a minefield.  Websites vary in terms of the quality and extent of data presented, and with more and more equipment being imported from the far east, suppliers need no longer be experts in their field, simply good at selling equipment, remember it is only a box to them.

The flaw is should you encounter a problem, you will also need an experienced supplier on hand like Abacus Weighing Services.  In our opinion that’s equally as important as the price, technical performance and the actual features of the equipment you are planning to buy.

Always work with an established supplier

There are numerous challenges for both buyer and seller when buying or selling industrial scale equipment online, and its something both parties should be aware of.

In terms of the seller, one of the biggest concerns is that you don’t immediately know what customers actual requirements are.  And it’s the same vice versa.  Customers may have a vague idea about what they are looking for, but aren’t 100% certain. It pays, therefore, to work with a supplier that understands different industry equipment requirements and production processes.

Here are some of the things you should check before buying online

- Is the online warranty “ BACK TO BASE”

- If this is the case, think twice

- Ensure the supplier offers an onsite warranty

- Is the equipment totally suitable for the task required

- Price, features and capabilities

- Experience of the supplier

- Legal for trade status of the equipment

- Your ongoing Calibration and service requirements

- Customer Support/Technical Services

- Compliance with other legalities, ie ATEX Weights & Measures

- Installation Support (if required)

5 things to consider before buying industrial scales

Posted by Marketing on September 20 2017 in

Accurate weighing is essential for any successful business. Before you invest in new industrial scales, it’s important to consider your requirements, so that you end with equipment that is beneficial for your industry and processes.

Here are 5 things that we think should be on your checklist when buying industrial scales.

Guarantee and services

It’s important to look at the warranty associated with scales, as problems can occur. Likewise if you need custom repairs or parts making, or routine maintenance and cleaning services, look out for this.

Environment

What type of environment will scales be used/stored in?  Will scales be used indoors/outdoors, in what type of location, ie: dusty, humid, flammable etc?  This is where checking equipment certification and classifications is key (ie ATEX approved). If it’s a wet environment, you may consider stainless scales, which are corrosion resistant.  The physical location is important too. Do the scales need to fit within a specific space?

Capacity

Consider the upper capacity that your scales need to weigh. Aside from investigating the overload capacity, you must also consider shock loading and dynamic loading, if items are likely to be dropped onto the platform.  Don’t forget you are not just buying for the present, but the future.

Applications

While it might seem basic, think through what you need your scales to do. Will it be part of the manufacturing process (ie: integral), or will scales be stored somewhere else? Is portability crucial?  What will you be weighing?

Connectivity

Scales are rarely used in isolation.  They need to connect with computers, printers and devices so that data can be shared, stored for QC/traceability purposes, research and development etc.  Consider too if your scales need to be connected to other equipment/lines.

Remember be thorough, work with a reputable supplier and be sure to chat through your requirements with them – don’t make your decision before consulting an expert.

Understanding the importance of ATEX weighing certification

Posted by Marketing on August 30 2017 in

ATEX is the name commonly given to the legal requirements for controlling explosive atmospheres and the suitability and performance of equipment used in them.

ATEX consists of two related EU directives that describe what equipment and work environment is allowed, in a location with a potentially explosive atmosphere.

The ATEX Regulations apply to all equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres, whether electrical or mechanical, and also to protective systems. That includes industrial weighing scales.

When purchasing equipment for use in hazardous locations, it’s important that you check certification to ensure that the scales you intend to purchase have been ATEX tested and approved for use in a relevant environment.

Equipment documentation must confirm ATEX conformity

All manufacturers that sell weighing equipment must provide technical documentation that allows customers to check the conformity of safety equipment with the requirements of the ATEX Regulations 1996.  Failure to do so is breaking the Law.

A good starting point when searching for equipment is to enter ATEX weighing in Google.

Industrial weighing equipment and its use in hazardous areas

Special precautions have to be taken in hazardous areas to prevent scale equipment from being a source of ignition.

If you are proposing to use weighing equipment in an environment where an explosive atmosphere is highly likely to occur, reliance should be placed on using equipment that has a low risk of creating a source of ignition.

Likewise, in situations where this likelihood is reduced, equipment that is designed to a less rigorous standard is suitable.

What are ATEX zones?

Equipment certification should confirm that scales are suitable for use in specific zones or areas, according to the level of risk.  Normally a health and safety officer (HSE) will provide you with the correct zoning requirement for your environment.

ATEX equipment – fit for purpose?

Is preventive maintenance really necessary when it comes to industrial scales?

Posted by Marketing on August 09 2017 in

Maintaining the accuracy and life of your industrial weighing equipment is extremely important, but is preventive maintenance really necessary, and the most effective way of achieving optimal performance?

Is a preventive maintenance contact something you must have, or a luxury you can’t afford?

A preventive maintenance programme is designed to extend the life and accuracy of industrial weighing equipment, leading to performance, cost and efficiency benefits.

Routine maintenance contracts are tailored to your bespoke requirements

Finding a business that both supplies equipment and provides other services like routine maintenance contracts is often the best combination, as it means you have a single company dealing with all aspects of your weighing scale efficiency. This is also good for accountability.

Look out for suppliers that provide UKAS calibration and preventive repair packages

While each contract is different, scheduled maintenance visits may include lubrication of scales, minor component replacement, specialist pit cleaning of weighbridges, pit scales, pallet truck scales etc, and routine calibration and adjustment, ensuring scales are operating within legal tolerances.

A UKAS approved calibration house must carry out calibrations

Sometimes an overhaul or upgrades to existing equipment can save the cost of outright replacement; this can be established during scheduled visits.

Traceability is hugely important

For QC purposes, it’s important that you can demonstrate that you are adopting best practices in relation to calibration, equipment maintenance etc, so all visits should be fully documented for traceability purposes.

The key benefit of implementing preventive measures when it comes to equipment maintenance is that it reduces downtime, given fewer machines breakdown, thus causing little or no disruption to daily routines and business efficiency.

All routine maintenance is typically carried out during periods of shutdown, or whenever it’s deemed to be least intrusive.

Is preventive maintenance really necessary?  Here at Abacus, we think it is, but then our standards are exceptionally high.

Cleaning tips for axle weighing pads and weighbridges

Posted by Marketing on July 18 2017 in

Keeping your weighbridge and axle weighing pads clean is an essential part of ownership.  This will ensure you don’t need to invest in hefty maintenance plans and repairs; it will also reduce unnecessary downtime.

Axle weigh pads and weighbridges are used to check weigh the load being carried by vehicles, cars, lorries and other transport.  An overloaded vehicle is a serious risk to both your business reputation, and to other people. It’s also illegal.

Intelligent cleaning regimes

Any weighing apparatus needs to be properly maintained, particularly if used frequently and/or in a harsh environment like a busy servicing department, or vehicle compound.

The build up of debris and dirt needs to be attended to, and any obstructions removed.

Keeping a close eye on equipment and doing regular checks as part of your daily inspections, should ensure that any problems are highlighted and can be sorted.

Specialised cleaning can also be beneficial

Aside from your internal cleaning and inspection regime, you can also commission a deeper clean.

Things like the build of mud over time, can be really difficult to remove with conventional cleaning methods, and can significantly alter the accuracy of the measurements you take.  If you need support with heavy-duty cleaning like this, ask your industrial weighing supplier.  Very often deep cleaning can be done during shutdown periods to minimise disruption.

By using a combination of weekly, monthly and quarterly cleaning regimes, you can be sure that your equipment will enjoy ongoing performance, and never let you down.

From a simple wipe down, visual inspection, removal of debris and obstructions, to more aggressive jet washing, intelligent cleaning can make a big difference.

Seek expert advice

Remember that axle weighing equipment is a critical piece of apparatus and you may need to seek advice from an expert before you carry out any cleaning work as it can have repercussions with regard to the Weights and Measures Regulations.

Pallet truck scales for sale: key issues

Posted by Marketing on June 22 2017 in

If you are responsible for the smooth running of a busy factory or warehouse space, then high performance pallet truck scales are essential.  When you start searching for pallet truck scales for sale, there are a few considerations you need to bear in mind.

Cost is just one part of the equation

While cost is going to have a part to play, there are many other key issues that you must address.  Your pallet truck scales are often the foundation of your factory.  Hardwearing, versatile and performing a wide range of daily weighing tasks, it’s hugely important to carefully think through what you need before you buy, as your choice can have financial and legal consequences.

Here are a few pointers:

1) Consider the maximum weight you are likely to be lifting/weighing. If you need a very high capacity, then you might wish to consider platform scales or beams.

2) Storage space is important.  Make sure that you have a protected area to keep your scales. Check dimensions on the relevant product sheet.

3) Assessment of the type of environment is exceptionally important as this can affect the accuracy of the readings you take.  ATEX Approved scales are required if your workspace has been classified as potentially flammable or explosive.

4) The type of design material you opt for could be important.  Stainless steel is a good option if used in a wet, humid environment in terms of performance and ease of cleaning.

5) A built-in electronic weighing feature can be an asset for efficient use and sharing of data throughout the process.

Abacus – a trusted partner

Abacus supplies a range of pallet truck scales for sale that are ATEX certified. That means that they are approved for use in potentially flammable or explosive environments, as defined under the latest European Legislation. As with other ATEX and general scale solutions, calibration and set up parameters can be configured from a keyboard.

What factors can affect the accuracy of your industrial scales?

Posted by Marketing on June 13 2017 in

There are a number of factors that affect the accuracy of your weighing systems over time. From environment changes, load cell deviation and general interference, you need to be sure that your scales give accurate, consistent readings when used.  Understanding what can affect overall scale accuracy is, therefore, important.

Are you looking for industrial scales for sale?

Each and every industrial environment can change and that can have a big impact on the accuracy of your weighing scales.

But what sorts of things cause this problem and how can these be overcome?

Here are some of the key factors that can change the readings your scales give.

1) Transporting equipment around can distort measurements – even the smallest change or movement, can have a big impact on the final weights you measure.

2) A build up of excessive dirt can cause issues with accuracy.

3) Environmental contamination can be a problem – ie: changes in air pressure, shock loading, even things like vibration.

4) Temperature variations can cause issues – extreme cold or hot conditions and things like moisture contamination.

5) Inaccuracies in weighing systems can result from the loads themselves, ie: the way they are placed, incorrect alignment etc.

6) Even something as simple as misinterpretation of the specification of scales that you need, can lead to inaccuracies, so be clear on your requirements from the outset.

Regular calibration and internal inspection need to be managed

If you’re looking to purchase industrial scales then you must ensure that they are regularly inspected, check weighed and calibrated if they are to give accurate readings.

Calibration should be carried out by a UKWF-approved supplier and is a straightforward comparison of readings taken on your balance or scale, against a calibrated reference weight.  Any necessary adjustments are made during calibration, taking into account legal tolerance limits as defined by the current Law.

Always work with an expert

Most experienced scale suppliers like Abacus, provide a broad range of services and support, including repair and maintenance, calibration and technical consultancy.  We are, therefore, in the best possible position to help you maintain your scales over time.

Some questions answered about industrial weighing scales

Posted by Marketing on May 16 2017 in

When it comes to industrial weighing scales, you need to be clear about what you need and why if you are to be legally compliant.  Here are some FAQs to help you decide which equipment is right for your business.

What are ‘legal for trade’ scales?

If you are a commercial business that sells by mass weight, you need to look out for ‘legal for trade’ equipment.  There are different classes of approval depending on the nature of your industry.  Your scales supplier will help you decide which one is right for you.

What are the ATEX Regulations?

ATEX refers to two different European Directives for controlling explosive atmospheres.

Directives set out the minimum requirements for safeguarding and improving the health and safety protection of workers, potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.

If your business is at risk, look out for ATEX weighing scales.  These will be labelled with the ATEX-Certified symbol.

By checking at point of purchase about relevant approvals, you can be sure that your ATEX weighing scales will comply with your zoned requirements be safe, durable and give accurate readings.

Hire v Purchase?

It doesn’t really make sense to be hiring weighing scales on a long-term basis.  However, if equipment is out for repair, you are stocktaking, or scales are in the throws of being replaced, a short-term hire arrangement could be an option.  It ensures business continuity, minimises downtime and maintains operational efficiencies.

Why is calibration so important?

If you cannot vouch for the accuracy (in weight) of the products you are producing, it can have serious legal, financial and operational consequences for your business.  Calibration brings surety, accuracy and reliability to your business and should not be overlooked.

The importance of routine maintenance of your industrial scales

Posted by Marketing on April 25 2017 in

Industrial scales are used for different applications, across multiple industries, covering a wide range of niches.  Irrespective of how, when and why they are employed, it makes sense to ensure they are in full working order, functioning at their highest capacity, at all times.

Why you should maintain your scales

If your scales do not work, even for a short period of time, there is a risk of incorrect packaging of products, material loss, over-filling, and of course, in the case of outright equipment failure, the costly issue of downtime.  That’s not to mention safety, customer care and legal compliance issues.  Entering into a routine maintenance contract with a reputable provider ensures that your weighing scales keep on performing and functioning, at their fullest capacity.

Solving issues before they develop

Planning ahead pays and routine maintenance ensures that your business and processes run at optimal levels.  Diagnosing and correcting minor issues before they develop is a great way of achieving this, and protecting your capacity as a business.  Unforeseen equipment failures caused by power surge, electrical faults, even accidents, can of course, still occur, but these can very often be dealt with by your routine maintenance provider.

Routine maintenance needs to be combined with legal calibration

Any routine maintenance contract that you enter into should also cover calibration, which is a legal requirement.  A business that can do both is often the best solution.

See our blog on: Why industrial scales need to be calibrated.

What if my scales break down or I need access to temporary equipment?

If during routine maintenance, a serious issue is detected that cannot be resolved onsite, you may need to consider scale hire.  This is often a temporary solution that can prove to be cost-effective for your business.  It means you can continue to work at full capacity, without any downtime, or disruption to your processes.  Scale hire is a quick fix for many weighing scale problems, but be sure to hire in the exact equipment that you need, to avoid complications down the line.

Why industrial scales need to be calibrated

Posted by Marketing on April 13 2017 in

Balance or scale calibration is essential if you are to gather consistent and accurate readings. Using non-calibrated, or out of calibration industrial scales, can result in costly mistakes being made, with serious repercussions. From unnecessary downtime, product recalls and reworks, to process and quality audit issues, it’s your legal obligation to ensure equipment is calibrated regularly.

What factors cause a scale to give an inaccurate reading?

There are a number of factors that can affect the accuracy and precision of your industrial scales.  This might be caused by simple wear and tear as a consequence of daily use, or by external factors like moving equipment, mechanical/electrical shocks or being located in a hazardous environment.  All of these things can lead to the accuracy of your scales being compromised.  Even the slightest variance, which may not be at first apparent, can develop over time and become a more serious problem.

You need to have confidence in your measurement results

Having your scales periodically calibrated by a UKAS Approved calibration provider, such as Abacus Weighing Services, can greatly enhance the lifetime of your balance or scale, and of course, give you the confidence that your measurements are wholly accurate.

Abacus’ laboratories are UKAS-accredited and licensed to BS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for carrying out calibrations.

What is calibration?

In simple terms, it’s a comparison based on quantitative analysis. UKAS engineers will check a reading given on your balance or scale, with a reference weight.  Any errors between the measured value (the reading), and the accurate value (the reference weight), will immediately become apparent and can be adjusted.  A scheduled calibration visit will result in a certificate being produced. This quantifies that equipment has been checked and is within legal tolerances.

How often should weighing scales be calibrated?

How often you have your weighing scales calibrated will depend on a number of issues – frequency of use, where they are located, the nature of the environment, type of equipment such as floor-standing, platform style etc.  The best way of determining the appropriate calibration period, is to ask your UKAS-approved provider.  An experienced calibration engineer will help you decide what is relevant for your business.

High performance industrial scales for the Automotive Industry

Posted by Marketing on April 09 2017 in

Accuracy is a highly debated topic in the weighing and weighing scales hire industry.  Certain markets, however, demand specific scale performance and features such as high read-out resolutions.  This is particularly true of the Automotive Industry.

Specialised products for a range of industries

Culimeta Saveguard manufactures a range of specialised products from advanced, high performance technical fibres.  Products are used to help protect the environment, people and equipment in the workplace, and also in emissions control equipment for the transport industry.  Their main areas of activity are in vehicle exhausts, passive fire protection, personal protection and thermal insulation.

A bespoke solution, in line with industry requirements

Most recently, engineers at Abacus Weighing Services have created a bespoke weighing scale solution for Culimeta Saveguard (Automotive Division).  This involved installation of a high-resolution base platform scale, and high-resolution indicator, by Dini Argeo. The indicator provides 10 times the normal read-out resolution.  This is in line with strict Automotive Industry requirements.

Clever design, innovative thinking

“Sometimes an ‘off-the-shelf solution doesn’t fit with specific industry requirements.  In this particular instance, we needed to achieve a specific read-out performance, together with a large platform size.  We managed to do this with some innovative thinking, a clever design, and the full cooperation of Culimeta Saveguard.  Whether we are supplying and installing a high performance weighing scale platform, or involved with weighing scales hire, we’re fully committed to finding solutions that work for our customers and are in line with the relevant industry standard/expectations.” said Chris Buck, Abacus Weighing Sales Director

Do you need a bespoke solution?

If your business needs a bespoke scale solution/design, requiring the experience and knowledge of a specialist industrial weighing scales expert, make sure you opt to work with a supplier that is suitably qualified in your area.  This might be a particular consideration if you work for/or are part of a specialist industry, requiring precision weighing equipment.

New innovation in Axle Weighing Pads

Posted by Marketing on April 05 2017 in

Truck axle scale technology has moved forward in recent years.  Thanks to leading manufacturers like Dini Argeo, portable axle weighing pads are now regarded as premium-level scale systems, combining ongoing durability and performance, with lots of enhanced user features.

A versatile approach

Portable weigh pads have become the industry standard.  Unlike larger, and less flexible mechanisms that were available just a few years ago, portable weigh pads deliver optimal convenience and efficiency for a number of industries.

Portability is a key benefit

Also known as truck axle scales, axle weighing pads are now much lighter and more portable than ever before.  It’s a good fit for vehicle businesses that can’t afford, or don’t have the space for a large-scale, permanent installation.  The most recent models are now capable of weighing anything from single, to multi-axle vehicles.

Dini Argeo weighing solutions:

• Enjoy enhanced overload protection

• Are based on a space-saving design – portable axle weighing pads take up very little room to store

• Have a significant increased capacity - weigh pads can withstand several tonnes of weight, which is good for tackling heavy-duty truckloads.

• Are highly portable – this allows for ease of movement across different environments.  Pads are also exceptionally light.

• Enjoy great versatility - can be used to measure different types of heavy-duty vehicles – from mining, right through to farming trucks

Axle weighing pads – aluminium is common

One of the most common design materials used to build portable weigh pads, is aluminium.  This is a very light and portable material, providing obvious user benefits.  This could be a particular advantage in busy automotive workshops and service areas where space is at a premium.  An example of one such system is the Dini Argeo WWS.  This can accommodate vehicles up to 60 tonnes in weight.

Approved network

Abacus Weighing Services is a European Distributor for the Dini Argeo range of axle weighing equipment.  Abacus supplies a range of wireless and analogue platforms, accessories and indicators.  These provide a high degree of versatility and functionality for different applications and industries.
